FILE BACKUP AND RESTORATION SERVICES

These file backup schedules, restoration policies, and fees apply to user files on the Sun UNIX system shell. They do not apply to BANNER/ORACLE databases or to other UNIX servers.

Backup

All disk storage is periodically copied to magnetic tape as a backup. Although University Computing takes reasonable steps to backup user files, users are encouraged to make their own backups of very important data, or data that will not be accessed for long periods of time (months or years). The backup schedule is as follows:

Day Time Type
--- ---- ----
    [shell]
Tuesday 5:00 PM Full
Wednesday - Monday 5:00 PM Incremental

Each set of daily backup tapes is retained for one month. Each set of quarterly backup tapes is retained for three years.

Restoration

Although backups are done primarily for disaster recovery purposes by Operations (e.g. failure of a disk drive and loss of the data recorded on it), users can request the restoration of files they have accidently lost. File restorations should be requested at the reception desk. To cover labor costs, there is a charge for this service of $30 per request for file retrieval from an on-site backup, and $60 per request for file retrieval from an off-site backup. Make sure your request covers all files you need to have restored, since subsequent requests will incur another charge.
