New UO Spam Filter Opt-Out Policy

Want to Try Opting Out of UO Spam Filtering?

New, flexible opt-out policy puts you in the driver's seat

Any Darkwing or Gladstone account-holder may now opt out of the University of Oregon's spam filtering environment--and then opt back in if they choose. Here's how:

You may either fill in the opt-out form online at https://password.uoregon.edu/spamme/ or take the following steps:

1. Log in on your Gladstone or Darkwing account using ssh

2. At the system prompt, enter the command:

% touch .spamme

Note: This command creates a file that exempts your account from virtually all spam filtering. In order for it to work, you must use this exact syntax (including the dot preceding .spamme) and you must put this file in your account's home (default) directory.

Within an hour or so, the spam filtering exemption will take effect.

If after spending some time in unfiltered mode you decide you don't like it, simply log back in and reset normal default filtering:

1. Log in on your Gladstone or Darkwing account using ssh

2. At the system prompt, enter the command:

% rm .spamme

Normal spam filtering will resume in about an hour.

Some things to keep in mind:

1. Opting out of spam filtering is not available on Oregon; it is for Gladstone and Darkwing accounts only.

2. If you choose to exempt yourself from spam filtering, please do not report any spam you may subsequently receive to spam@uoregon.edu
