As many departments are already aware, Network Services began phasing out AppleTalk
and Novell IPX network routing on campus in January. On July 1, the entire campus
network migrated to TCP/IP-based service in preparation for a global network
upgrade.
TCP/IP-based services are available for both Novell (Windows) and AppleTalk
(Macintosh) systems. To use them, you'll probably need to reconfigure servers
and desktop computers if you haven't already done so. Novell IPX services will
now work only inside your subnet (typically, your subnet is in your building).
If you use a Mac, you can still use the Chooser to see resources on your own
subnet. With versions OS 8.6 and higher, you can specify a TCP/IP resource in
the Chooser, but you'll need to know the TCP/IP addresses for the servers
and printers you wish to select.
Everyone also needs to be sure they have current software. (The minimum software
version for Novell to enable TCP/IP services is 4.0, but version 5 is recommended.
The minimum version of MacOS is 8.6.)
If you rely heavily on AppleTalk, Network Services (nethelp@ns.uoregon.edu) can help you make the necessary adjustments to keep your in-building AppleTalk zone working smoothly. If you need help with reconfiguration or determining the TCP/IP addresses of the various servers and printers on campus, start by consulting the illustrated information pages at http://micro.uoregon.edu/iponly These pages explain the reasons behind the upgrade to TCP/IP and give step-by-step instructions for Mac TCP/IP printing and file sharing.
