To provide better flexibility and ease of management, Network Services recently
upgraded its network management tools for gathering SNMP traffic data.
Its new server, netstat.uoregon.edu, runs a codebase called Netviewer that
was developed by Stephen Fromm, a network and operations systems engineer for
NERO (Network for Research and Education in Oregon). Netviewer serves as a flexible
front end for communicating with network devices and provides a seamless interface
with RRD (Round Robin Database), an improved version of the traditional MRTG
code formerly employed by Network Services.
The new database statistics at http://netstat.uoregon.edu
are dynamically generated every five minutes. Router interfaces on UOnet are
sorted by network address, router, traffic, and errors. The site also displays
statistics on UOnet backbone switches, campus border routers, and modem pool
traffic, as well as statistics for the Oregon Gigapop and Oregon Internet Exchange
(OIX).
Although the old server name (gupta.uoregon.edu) redirects you to the new server,
you should update your bookmarks and direct your network traffic queries to
http://netstat.uoregon.edu
Note: You won't be able to access the netstat server from off-campus unless you connect via the UO's VPN (virtual private network). See "Virtual Private Network Services Ready for UO Off-Campus Cable Modem/DSL Users," in the Spring 2002 issue of Computing News (available online at http://cc.uoregon.edu/cnews/spring2002/vpn.html).
