Internet2 Taps Juniper for Next Generation Abilene Backbone Routing

Internet2, the high-speed academic and research network that comprises over 190 U.S. universities working with government and industry, recently announced a collaboration with Juniper Networks in a nationwide upgrade of its Abilene backbone.

When the upgrade is complete, Abilene will replace its Cisco GSR routers with eleven of Juniper's new T640 Internet Routing Nodes, which are among the largest and fastest routers available today. Aside from seamless multi-terabit scaling, the T640s offer IPv6 hardware forwarding. (IPv6 is the next generation for TCP/IP and offers vastly expanded numbers of network addresses.)
