First Annual UO Computing Conference a Big Hit

On May 2, Microcomputer Services and the Computing Center presented the first annual UO Computing Conference in the EMU.

Designed to encourage information sharing from various areas of networking and computing expertise, the conference attracted 80 attendees from the university and local school districts. It was organized into nine separate sessions and covered topics ranging from general troubleshooting techniques to the topology of UONet and an introduction to PHP, Windows XP, and Mac OS X.

The most popular session was "UONet Unveiled." This session, which was presented by Network Services staff members José Dominguez and Dale Smith, gave attendees an in-depth, behind-the-scenes view of the university's network and its services.

Conference organizer Patrick Chinn was pleased with the results. "We wanted folks to get together and share their knowledge with each other," Chinn said. "This was a good step in the right direction."

The positive feedback from participants almost certainly guarantees that the conference will become an annual event. "We're tentatively planning another conference for next year," Chinn said. "It's too early to announce any dates or locations, but once we make those decisions we'll post them on the conference website (http://micro.uoregon.edu/conference/)."
