Support Dropped for Internal Software-based 'Winmodems'

As we noted in the Spring 2000 newsletter (see "Problems with WinModems, Some Older Modems" at http://cc.uoregon.edu/cnews/spring2000/modemproblems.html), we have found that certain internal modems can be very difficult to properly install and troubleshoot.

Because of these issues, Microcomputer Services staff will no longer be able to support or provide assistance for so-called Winmodems (modems which rely on the host CPU or host software to function, and which typically are targeted to work only with selected versions of Windows 95 or 98).

If you are purchasing a modem identified as "Windows only," it's very likely a software-based modem--one that we will not be supporting.

When purchasing a modem, your best bet is almost always to buy a name-brand external modem from a reputable vendor. If you have further questions about modems, contact Microcomputer Services (microhelp@oregon.uoregon.edu, 346-4412). You'll also find pertinent information on the "Buying Networking Hardware and Software" page of their website at http://micro.uoregon.edu/buyersguide/buyingnetstuff.html#Modems)
