Time to Begin Using SSH

Effective immediately, if you telnet to the UO's large time sharing hosts, you will now see this new warning banner:

CAUTION! This telnet connection is unencrypted and hacker/crackers may be able to eavesdrop upon your username and password and other network traffic. Because of this vulnerability, unencrypted telnet access to <host name> will be discontinued effective January, 2002.

That warning is designed to remind you to begin using SSH, a secure (encrypted) replacement for telnet that eliminates the possibility of your username and password being "sniffed" (eavesdropped upon) by hacker/crackers.

We strongly recommend you use SSH (secure shell) instead of telnet. Free SSH clients for your PC or Mac are available on the both the UO Duckware 2000 and 2001 CD-ROMs.

To install SSH, select the "Install Now - Network Applications" link on the main Duckware 2000 screen. (The Duckware 2001 CD, which will be released in September, automatically activates the installer when it's inserted in your machine.) After the installation is complete, Mac users will find SSH under the Apple Menu->UOnet->Telnet->Nifty Telnet (or "Better Telnet" if Duckware 2001) SSH. Windows users will find the SSH links under Start-> Programs-> Network Applications-> Telnet (SSH).

If you need help installing SSH, contact microhelp@oregon.uoregon.edu (346-4412).

Also note that as of January 2002, you will no longer be able to use telnet to connect to Darkwing, Gladstone, or Oregon--so don't delay! Switch from telnet to SSH today.
