Email Glitch Underscores Potential Problems of Mass Mailing
Early last May, OREGON's email queues slowed to a crawl due to a mass mailing
by a campus user. Approximately 5,000 backlogged messages, including many additional
entries resulting from messages being bounced back to the sender for having
exceeded message size and quotas on other systems, clogged OREGON's email queues
for several hours until systems analysts could clear up the problem.
This episode underscores the importance of using mass-mailing capabilities judiciously,
as outlined in the article "Getting Your Message Out Via Email" on
page 18 of the Spring 2001 Computing News. This article is also online at http://cc.uoregon.edu/cnews/spring2001/massmail.html
