UO web email is a good choice for students, faculty, and staff who are casual email users or access their mail from multiple locations. UO web email is SSL-encrypted, and it's easy to use.
Those of you who are returning to campus are probably already familiar with our traditional "green" web email ( http://email.uoregon.edu/ ), which allows you to log into your UO email account securely from off-campus.
This fall we are introducing another web email option, "Alpha Mail," which has many additional features you may want to try. Alpha Mail is still in the testing stage, but it will eventually be phased in as the UO's primary web email.
If you're interested in trying Alpha Mail, select the "New test web email" option on the UO web email page at http://email.uoregon.edu/ The first time you log in, you'll be asked to establish your preferences, such as your signature, message format, return address, and number of messages displayed per page (you may change these settings at any time by clicking "Settings" in the menu bar at the top of each page). Thereafter, whenever you log in you'll go directly to your Inbox.
Among some of the handy new features included in Alpha Mail is the ability to instantly check your disk quota or add to your address book by using the top-level menu bar. You can also easily organize your mail by creating folders that are accessible from the menu on the left of your email window, and you have the option of deleting and purging messages directly, without having to first store them in a Trash folder. Another very handy feature is a link called "Share a large file," which provides an interactive form for sending files up to 200 Megabytes in size.
Whether you use "green" webmail or "blue" Alpha Mail, you can use them in addition to your other favorite email clients such as Thunderbird or Mac OS X Mail without worrying about messages being moved around as they're read. This is especially convenient when you travel and must access your email from multiple locations.
