Allow Time for Password Changes to Take Effect

When you’re changing your uoregon.edu password, whether you’re using the interactive form at https://password.uoregon.edu/or the passwd command at the Unix % prompt, please be aware that it may take up to ten minutes for that change to be reflected on all systems that rely on your username and password.

Because of the lag time after you change your uoregon.edu password, you’ll most likely notice that:

1. You are immediately able to log to your account via ssh using the new password, but you cannot log in to web email (or another service) using that same new password
2. Ten minutes later the problem magically disappears, and everything works normally

If you experience this phenomenon, it is likely related to the periodic nature of the password synchronization process. When changing your password, please allow time for your new password to synchronize across all systems.
