Campus Wireless Coverage Expands

This fall, the UO's wireless network is being upgraded to expand coverage and improve security. This upgrade is still underway and is not expected to be completed until winter term, but you can immediately take advantage of the expanded coverage if your laptop and software are compatible with our system.

Software requirements. To use your laptop to connect to the Internet on campus, you'll need to install the new AS 2000 Client (ASC), which authenticates your user ID and safeguards your privacy. Under the new system, you'll be required to provide your email account username and password to connect to the wireless network, much as you do when dialing in with a modem. (ASC for both Windows and Macintosh is available free for download from http://micro.uoregon.edu/wireless ).

Laptop requirements. You'll need a Windows or Macintosh laptop. Other platforms are currently not supported, but may be in the coming months.

Checking out cards. With a $20 refundable deposit, you can check out a WaveLAN wireless ethernet card from the Computing Center Documents Room (175 Grayson). The cards may be checked out for two weeks and may be renewed twice. Call 346-4406 for information.
