Join a Newsgroup: Try USENET News

If you're interested in subscribing to any of the hundreds of newsgroups online, you have two USENET news server options at the UO: news.uoregon.edu and platform.uoregon.edu The default server for most shared systems and most public microcomputer labs is news.uoregon.edu (aka, pith.uoregon.edu).

If you're using Netscape to read news, you can either specify a server to use in Netscape's Options menu, or you can try using a URL like news://platform.uoregon.edu or news://news.uoregon.edu To specify the news server you want to use on Darkwing, Gladstone, or another UNIX system, set the NNTPSERVER environmental variable before launching trn, tin, nn, drn, or another news reader, i.e.,

% setenv NNTPSERVER platform

If you like using that news server, you can then use pico, vi, emacs, or another editor to add that default to your .cshrc file. (Group availability and article numbering in individual groups will vary across servers. You may want to save a copy of your .newsrc file prior to trying a different server in case you want to roll back to your old server.)

NOTE: This fall, we've doubled the amount of memory for news.uoregon.edu, eliminating problems with slowness you may have experienced previously.
