DSL Offers Faster Internet Access to Off-Campus Users

With DSL, you can talk on the phone and simultaneously connect to the Internet at high speed...

If you take your work home, share large files, work on bandwidth-intensive files and research, or are simply a power Internet user, you may be looking for an option to slow dial-up connections.

If so, you might want to consider DSL (Digital Subscriber Line). With a DSL connection from a telecommunications company, you can get anything online up to 900% faster than with a standard modem.

What is DSL?

DSL transports voice and data over the network on the same line, from your house to your telecommunications company. At that time, the company's equipment in the network will split the voice and data components of each call; the voice is transmitted over the public switched telephone network and the data is transferred to a high-speed fiber optic network. This allows you to talk on the phone and use the Internet at the same time.

Find out if your telephone line qualifies for DSL

Qwest, formerly known as US WEST, is currently the primary DSL provider in the Willamette Valley, and its MegaBit Services (DSL) are available in many (but not all) Oregon Service Offices. Availability depends on your distance from the Service Office and technical phone line qualifications. (To see if your line qualifies, call 1-877-236-8169).

UO Custom Ordering: If you're affiliated with the UO and wish to order DSL service from Qwest, please place your order from the University of Oregon DSL custom ordering page at http://megawot.uswest.com/uor/

For a current list of megabit-qualified Internet Service Providers in Oregon, see http://www.uswest.com/products/data/dsl/isplist.html#oregon
