MP3's combination of compact file size and high sound quality makes it a popular format for the exchange of music and other multimedia online, but be careful! The recent judgment against MP3.com, in which the company lost a large civil suit for CD copyright infringement, underscores the importance of taking copyrights seriously in all media.
University of Oregon student, faculty, and staff need to be aware that MP3s are like any other media, and all copyright provisions still apply to that content. Trafficking in copyrighted material without express permission from the copyright holder is a violation of the University of Oregon Acceptable Use of Computing Resources and federal law, and may result in civil or criminal action or university sanctions.
