Campus Departments: Use Virtual Hosts to Streamline UO Site Addresses

By Hans Kuhn (hak@darkwing.uoregon.edu)

Since January 1999, UO colleges, institutes, centers, and organizations with web pages on DARKWING have been able to request a "virtual hostname" for their sites. This feature makes site addresses easier to remember.

For example, if the URL for your department's web page is currently something like http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~german you can ask Computing Center systems staff to create a virtual host for this page with a less cumbersome address, such as http://german.uoregon.edu

Selecting a Virtual Hostname

There are four important points to keep in mind when requesting a virtual hostname for your web site:

1. Virtual hostnames must not be currently assigned to another computer or mailing list. To make sure the name you want is not currently being used by another computer, type nslookup followed by the host name you wish to have assigned, e.g.,

% nslookup german.uoregon.edu

If the name you entered is found, you won't be able to request it.

2. The name you pick must be descriptive. For example, the Computing Center would select cc.uoregon.edu or computing.uoregon.edu instead of abacus.uoregon.edu or another obscure reference.

3. Virtual hostnames are used only for web site URLs, not for email addresses or any other purpose.

4. Personal accounts can't have virtual hostnames. You must have a departmental account to host the web site. If you need a departmental account, please contact Connie French (account@oregon.uoregon.edu).
