UOnet and Oregon Gigapop Get Significant Boost from 3Com

This June, the University of Oregon's computer network and high-speed networking infrastructure received a big boost from 3Com, the leading provider of campus networking solutions.

3Com, an Internet2 corporate partner, donated $100,000 to finance a tenfold boost in the core speed of the campus network (UOnet), and to provide gigabit hardware for the Oregon Gigapop, which provides high-speed connectivity to Oregon's research institutions.

The UO is one of approximately 150 universities participating in Internet2 and the Abilene Network, a nationwide fiber-optic network that researchers are using to push the bounds of high-performance computing on the Internet and develop the next generation of Internet applications. 3Com's gift is being used to upgrade UOnet from fast ethernet speeds (100 megabits per second) to gigabit ethernet speeds (1,000 megabits per second)Ñroughly 18,000 times faster than a home desktop (56K) modem that connects personal computers to the Internet.

The UO's participation in the Abilene Network is partially funded by grants from the National Science Foundation. Additional funding is provided by the Oregon Joint Graduate Schools of Engineering and Cisco Systems, Inc.
