New Proxy Server Means Faster Web Browsing
The UO Computing Center recently added a new web proxy server that will
dramatically speed up your access to web resources. Because proxies store
local copies of frequently-accessed web sites, after the first viewing you
won't have to wait for a page to load from a very remote or slow web server.
Instead, web sites you've already visited will load quickly from our local
server, proxy.uoregon.edu, which has more than 1300 MB of storage
capacity.
How to use the proxy
Here's how to enter the new proxy setting in each of the three most popular
web browsers:
Netscape Navigator -
- Open the Options menu and select "Network Preferences..."
- Click "Proxies" and select "Manual Proxy Configuration."
- Click "View..."
- In the "HTTP Proxy" field, type proxy.uoregon.edu
- In the "Port:" field, type 3128
Netscape Communicator -
- Open the Edit menu and select, in sequence, "Preferences,"
"Advanced," and "Proxies."
- Choose "Manual proxy configuration" and click "Configure..."
- In the "HTTP Proxy:" field, type proxy.uoregon.edu
- In the "Port:" field, type 3128
Internet Explorer 4.0 -
- 1. Open the View menu and select "Internet Options," followed
by "Connections"
- 2. Check the box labeled "Access the Internet using proxy server."
- 3. Click "Advanced."
4. In the "HTTP" field, enter: Address: proxy.uoregon.edu
Port: 3128
